National Certificate in Community Support Services (Human Services) (Level 3)

This national certificate was registered on the National Qualifications Framework in August 2008 and, in conjunction with the National Certificate in Community Support (Core Competencies) (Level 3), supersedes the National Certificate in Human Services (Level 4) which is due to expire in December 2010. This new level three qualification consists of a compulsory section of 10 unit standards totalling 41 credits, and an elective section of 7 unit standards from which 14 credits must be chosen to total 55 credits.

This qualification is designed to recognise the knowledge and skills required of support workers in the delivery of human support services. It has been developed in conjunction with the National Certificate in Community Support (Core Competencies) which is a pre-requisite for this qualification.

The compulsory section of the qualification includes skills and knowledge relating to maintaining documentation, personal and community values, value of relationships, implications for a sibling, supporting a person with a communication impairment, infection control, safe working environment, facilitating a learning plan, reporting changes in a person’s condition, and ethical behaviour.

The elective section of the qualification enables candidates to select specific unit standards that support the requirements of their work environment.  It includes standards that cover cultural aspects of care and standards that cover knowledge of epilepsy and communication with deaf and hearing impaired people.  It also covers some legal aspects and more detailed knowledge of issues associated with intellectual disability.

Holders of the National Certificate in Community Support Services (Foundation Skills) (Level 2) can receive 11 credits towards this qualification.

The cost of this qualification is $200 (incl GST) per trainee, plus hook-on fee of $25 (if applicable). However, if a trainee enrols and pays for the pre-requisite qualification (NC Community Support (Core Competencies)) prior to 31 December 2008, and completes this qualification before 31 December 2009, there will be no charge for this human services strand qualification.
